There are changes coming to AISH
The government of Alberta has introduced a discussion paper regarding the new Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP). This program is in addition to the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program. All current AISH recipients will be moved to the new ADAP program effective July 1, 2026. There will be an application process to become eligible for AISH. The criteria, as we know it, is the applicant’s ability to work.
In short, if the disabled person has the ability to work, they would be on ADAP. The benefits are proposed to be $200 less than the level of support for AISH ($1,740 vs $1,940).
AISH in contrast is reserved for those who can not work.
We have put together a Whitepaper on the proposed changes in more detail. You can download it here.
The firm has also started a podcast called “We Advocate”, co-hosted by Gordon VanderLeek, the firm’s founder and managing lawyer together with Annie VanderLeek, a Disability Advocate with the firm.
